Happy Fourth of July! As people are feeling good about getting out and about once more, Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services encourages you to take in a professional firework show instead of using consumer fireworks. This is the safest way to enjoy fireworks. The danger of burn injuries is multiplied exponentially when utilizing these types of fireworks. Even sparklers can cause significant burns. Although they seem like the perfect option for children, the temperature of a sparkler can reach 1200 degrees. To put that in perspective, a cake bakes at 350 degrees and wood burns at 575 degrees. In addition, fireworks start fires if not used correctly or accidentally misfire, causing millions of dollars of property damage and even death. If choosing to use or watch fireworks bought at fireworks stands and in stores, please use caution and follow these simple safety precautions:       • Purchase fireworks from a licensed fireworks dealer.     • Observe all state laws regarding the use of fireworks.     • Read the labels carefully before igniting any fireworks.     • Ensure that an adult supervises all firework activities. (You must be 18 years old to purchase or light fireworks)     • Never allow children to ignite fireworks.     • Wear safety glasses and gloves when shooting fireworks.     • Light only one firework at a time.     • Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.     • Never try to relight a firework. Soak it with water and leave it for several hours.     • Have a garden hose or bucket of water nearby.     • Use caution with animals. Excitement, noise and lights can cause fear and stress.
