Safe Kids Cherokee County was presented today with the Outstanding Safe Routes to School Friend Award for the North Georgia Region from the Georgia Department of Transportation. The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program empowers communities to make walking and bicycling to school safe by providing education, encouragement, enforcement, evaluation, planning and other non-construction related SRTS activities. Patti Pittman, School Outreach Coordinator with the Georgia DOT, presented the award to Lisa Grisham, with Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services and Safe Kids Cherokee at the Fire Training Center. According to Pittman, the award has been around since its inception in 2009. Community members nominate organizations who work with educating children with bike and pedestrian safety. One winner from each of the 4 regions in the state are eligible for the award. Friend Partners are stakeholder organizations, agencies, businesses, or even individuals that support SRTS strategies at one or more schools in the community. “It’s truly an honor for Safe Kids Cherokee County to be the recipient of this year’s award. We are dedicated to protecting kids from preventable injuries in Cherokee County which is the number one cause of death to children in the United States,” stated Lisa Grisham. Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services is the Lead Agency for Safe Kids Cherokee.
