Police Offer 'Pokemon Go' Safety Warnings After Police Called on Players

They also shared the story about how the smartphone game was used to lure victims into armed robberies in another area.

Johns Creek police say they have no problem with locals getting into the adventurous spirit of the new smartphone-based game Pokemon Go -- but they want to caution players about how to do so safely, and how not to end up getting arrested in the process.

"Beware that the police have been called on Pokemon Go players," the Johns Creek Police Department said in a post on their Facebook page Wednesday.

Police offered the following tips for playing the game safely and smartly:

  • Know where you are going - stay in public areas (don't venture onto private property), and be vigilant.
  • Parents, set area limits or boundaries for your children while playing Pokemon Go.
  • Bring a friend along (don't wander playing alone).
  • NEVER search for Pokemon while driving.
  • Avoid walking into trees, people, and vehicles by stopping while looking on your phone.
  • Remember, it's just a game. Play safely.

Johns Creek police also shared a rather disturbing news article from Missouri, about how a group of teens lured victims through a "beacon" near an advertised Poke-Stop.

WBTV reports that when players showed up to try to catch characters, the teens were allegedly hiding in their car with a gun, and robbed the individuals.

Police told WBTV they arrested the three suspects, who had a stolen wallet and phone on them. The two 17-year-olds and one 18-year-old have been charged with armed robbery.
