On January 26th, cadets from the Cobb County Composite Squadron and the Bartow-Etowah Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol traveled to Huntsville, Alabama to visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. The Civil Air Patrol, with units in all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico, is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force, performing inland search and rescue missions, educating youth on aerospace education, leadership, character development, emergency services, and allowing adult members to participate and serve as pilots, communications officers, and more.
While on the trip, cadets and adult members had fun while participating in aerospace education. Cadets on the trip got to do simulations like controlling a model of the arm of the International Space Station and simulations in space suits. Those that went also got to see the Saturn V rocket, which was so massive that they had to stand about 200 feet from the rocket itself just to fit the cadets and the rocket in the same picture.

In addition to this, they learned about radio communications by seeing how NASA does their ground to space communications and saw the simulation shuttles that NASA uses to train their pilots.
Opportunities like this are constantly available through the Civil Air Patrol program. For more information, visit ga090.org or visit the Cobb County Composite Squadron on facebook @CobbCAP
