CYT Atlanta Set to Present Disney’s Freaky Friday: A New Musical
Youth theater troupe to share the onstage reboot of the classic Disney comedy

Christian Youth Theater (CYT) of Atlanta is finalizing preparations for its spring production of Disney’s Freaky Friday: A New Musical. The full-length Broadway style show will feature third grade to senior high students from over a dozen local schools.
The May 2nd through 5th run at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church’s Main Auditorium offers five performances: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:00pm with matinees on Saturday at 2:00 and Sunday at 3:00.
“Freaky Friday has a long history with many versions of the fun body-swap storyline from Mary Rodgers’ 1972 book,” said CYT Artistic Director Anna Kilbride.

“However, Freaky Friday the Musical adds some deeper concepts like the weight of grief and the pressure of perfectionism. It's not just about understanding another person but accepting them flaws and all. I was really drawn to a musical that presented these realistic subjects in an incredibly funny, heartwarming and entertaining way” added Ms. Kilbride.
Most similar to the 2018 Disney Channel version of Freaky Friday, the musical incorporates original songs with a current pop flavor. CYT’s cast capitalizes on its seasoned, yet youthful cast, to bring these songs to life.

High school seniors Devi Peot, Cam Kreitner (both from Chattahoochee High) and Abby Grace Freet (from South Forsyth) will be performing in their last CYT productions. Ms. Peot and Ms. Freet will both be featured in the lead role of Katherine, mother to Ellie, with whom she magically switches places.
From Musical Theater International (https://www.mtishows.com/freaky-friday)– “When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic, and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic. By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another's struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.
“The new musical, Freaky Friday, based on the beloved 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films (and developed by Disney Theatrical Productions expressly for licensing to theatres), features a book by Bridget Carpenter - the co-executive producer and writer on the beloved TV hits, "Friday Night Lights" and "Parenthood" - and music and lyrics by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey - the Pulitzer Prize-winning composers of Next to Normal and If/Then.”
The show is appropriate and fun for all ages.
