Funeral On Friday For Father, Daughter Killed in Crash

ROSWELL, GA -- Family and friends will gather Friday to say goodbye to the Roswell daughter and father who died early Monday morning in a single-vehicle accident.

The memorial service for Robert "Stephen" Smith, 52, and daughter Sydney Smith, 21, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2 at First Baptist Church Roswell.

Visitation for the pair will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the church.

The crash was reported around 1:20 a.m. Nov. 28 along King Road near Cox Road. A preliminary investigation indicates a black Ford Mustang was traveling north on King Road when it left the roadway and hit a stone mail box, said Roswell police spokesperson Lisa Holland.

The car destroyed the first mailbox before striking another stone mailbox, Holland added. The elder Smith was pronounced dead at the scene while Sydney Smith, who was ejected from the vehicle, was transported to an area hospital where she later died from her injuries, Holland said.

The family dog also passed away inside the vehicle due to the accident.

According to her obituary, Sydney Smith graduated from The King's Academy, and her hobbies were painting and photography.

"She also had a deep passion for the love and care of animals," the obit states. "She took pride in her mission work and loved her family and friends very much."

Born in Rome, Steve Smith spent his childhood in the northwest Georgia town of Rockmart. He attended Jacksonville State University where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, his obituary states.

He also attended Liberty Seminary, and served as a long time boys youth leader and a Sunday school teacher. He was a loyal fan of Atlanta Falcons football and a long time devoted fan of Jacksonville State.

"Steve loved spending time with his family and was completely devoted to his loving wife and daughters," the obituary adds.

Both are preceded in death by Bobby Gene Smith, Steve Smith's father. Survivors include mother and wife, Micah McKoy Smith; sister and daughter, Samantha Smith; mother and grandparents, Shelba Statham Smith Wright (Chuck), Denny and Susan McKoy; sister and aunt, Angie Smith; brother-in-law and uncle, Matthew McKoy (Susan); nephew and cousin, Hudson McKoy, and numerous other cousins.
