Habitat for Humanity affiliates across Georgia express gratitude
More Georgia families can achieve the dream of homeownership due to the passage of State Referendum A.

On November 3, Georgia voters overwhelmingly approved the passage of State Referendum A, which exists to provide a property tax exemption to bona fide nonprofits, such as Habitat for Humanity, for vacant lots they hold for future development. Once developed and sold, the properties will again be placed on the tax rolls and begin to generate more tax income than they previously did.
“On behalf of the 55 Habitat for Humanity affiliates operating in our state, we would like to extend our gratitude to the people of Georgia for approving State Referendum A. The people of Georgia’s commitment to equitable housing for all is the reason we have been proud to have worked here for over 40 years,” said Colin Martin, President of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity of Georgia.
Habitat for Humanity has assisted over 7 million families across the world to acquire sustainable housing through its innovative programs. Habitat for Humanity builds, renovates, and repairs houses, which it then sells to eligible low-income buyers with a zero-percent-interest mortgage. Habitat for Humanity affiliates finance these mortgages themselves with the generosity of their donors and proceeds from their ReStore retail operations.

“The impact of State Referendum A will be exceptionally positive for Georgia Habitat affiliates,” said Ryan Willoughby, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Georgia. “The Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Georgia offer low-cost homeownership opportunities to nearly 450 families in our state each year. The ability to save money on development costs through a property tax exemption, will improve our ability to serve families in Georgia.”
