Winners Announced: Roswell Garden Club Environmental Blog Competition
Inspired by 16-year-old Greta Thernberg’s speech to the UN and the National Garden Club, Inc.’s Conservation Pledge – “I pledge to protect and conserve the natural resources of the planet earth and promise to promote education so we may become caretakers of our air, water, forest, land, and wildlife.” Roswell Garden Club invited high school students from public, private, and home schools in the city to write a blog post exploring how the citizens of Roswell can become caretakers of our air, water, forest, land, and wildlife.

All three winners are students at Roswell High School. Tara Goff took first place and received a $100.00 check for her blog entitled “The Do’s and Don’ts of Recycling.” Tara, a junior, is a writing coach for the News section of the school newspaper, The Sting.
Savannah Young’s blog “We Can Lower Our Carbon Footprint and End Climate Change—Here’s How” won 2nd place and $50.00. Savannah is a freshman who serves as page editor for the News page.
Maynor Chinchilla’s “Why am I Helping the Environment?” took 3rd place and earned him $50.00. Maynor, a junior, is in his 2nd Ayear in Newspaper class and serves as Graphics Captain.
Their teacher, Megan Volpert, directs the newspaper class and teaches English at Roswell High. She said, “My students enjoy writing for the Roswell Garden club’s competition because it gives them a break from the usual types of articles/blogs that the Sting newspaper work requires of them. Many of them are also passionate about the environment and the contest topics have so far been a good outlet for those feelings.”
The students’ work can be viewed on the blog tab at roswellgardenclub.com. You do not have to be a resident of Roswell to join RGC. Information about our active club is on our website.
