Roswell Named To 'Champions Of Tennis' Award List

The city was recognized as the parks and recreation agency of the year by Tennis Industry magazine for its tennis program.

ROSWELL, GA — The Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department was named Parks and Rec Agency of the Year for its tennis program.

The city was recognized by Tennis Industry magazine, which highlighted the program in its January issue that named its 2018 Champions of Tennis awards. These awards recognize individuals and organizations that go “above and beyond in helping to make a difference” in the tennis industry.

Roswell's tennis program operates on 28 city courts at five locations, the largest of which is the 12-court Roswell Area Park. Each year, more than 4,300 people are served through the city’s tennis classes, camps, and open play areas. Almost 1,000 youth and adult tennis players are on teams that call Roswell’s tennis facilities home.

The story highlights the significant contributions of Scott Laakso, Roswell’s athletic coordinator, who supervised the tennis program for more than 15 years and helped to create a program so successful it has inspired other community tennis programs around the nation.

“Roswell has been a pilot and an example for many [Community Tennis Associations] and parks across the country,” the magazine quotes Todd Carlson with the U.S. Tennis Association as saying.
