Winter Storm: Main Highways In Roswell In "Pretty Good" Shape

Roswell police say there is still cause for concern, as roads that didn't thaw out Saturday could make for dangerous driving conditions.

ROSWELL, GA -- It appears the city of Roswell may have dodged a bullet, as the winter storm that settled into north Georgia Friday evening had minimal impact on the city.

The city has not seen any major issues reported on roadways or any major incidents.

"There have been some accidents but they are mainly in neighborhoods," said Roswell police spokesperson Lisa Holland. "The main roads, Highway 92, Highway 9 and Highway 140 are pretty good."

There are some some spots that could cause some issues, as icy patches have been reported along Highway 140 from Eves Road to the Gwinnett County line and on Highway 92 near the Bowen Road-Mountain Park Road intersection.

"There is a concern about the roads refreezing tonight, as some roads did not melt/thaw, mainly in neighborhoods," she added.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning that officially lasted until 1 p.m. Saturday.
By Saturday morning, the warning's focus had moved from snow to black ice on the roads, dangerously cold winds and downed trees and limbs caused by heavy and sustained icing.

"We're out there on the roads and, if you don't have to travel, please avoid any unnecessary travel on our roads as we're trying to be out there clearing what did stick and what's remaining today," Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Katie Strickland said in a video statement Saturday morning.

With winds gusting above 30 m.p.h., the weather service also issued a Wind Chill Advisory for Saturday.

Exposure to a combination of low temperatures and high winds "will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken," the NWS said in the advisory. "If you must venture outdoors, make sure you wear a hat and gloves."
