Sandy Springs-based Act3 Productions presents "Parade" a musical with book by Alfred Uhry, (creator of Driving Miss Daisy), through Nov. 23.

The play tells the true story of Jewish Factory manager Leo Frank, who was accused of raping and murdering 13-year-old Mary Phagan a century ago in Atlanta. After a sensationalized trial followed by incarceration, Frank was seized in prison and taken to Phagan’s hometown, where he was hanged from an oak tree by a lynching mob.

The events led to the revival of the KKK in Atlanta, as well as the creation of a Jewish Civil Rights organization, the Anti-Defamation League. Uhry, who grew up in Atlanta, is familiar with the story, since his great-uncle owned the pencil factory where Frank worked.

The musical focuses on the relationship between Frank and his wife, Lucille. It was first produced on Broadway in 1998 and won Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Original Score. It also won six Drama Desk awards.
