Detours Planned for Abernathy Road, I-285 Entrance Ramp

The Georgia Department of Transportation will also pace traffic Oct. 27-28 on Ga. 400 in Sandy Springs.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation will roll out detours this weekend in connection to the massive reconstruction of the Ga. 400/Interstate 285 interchange in Sandy Springs.

The first detour will involve GDOT construction partners closing the I-285 eastbound ramp to S.R. 400 northbound to perform bridge construction at the interchange. The lane closure will go into effect continuously from 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 to 5 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 28. Drivers are asked to detour around the closure by using Ga. 400 southbound, exiting at Glenridge Drive and continuing on that street to access S.R. 400 northbound.

Crews will also close a segment of Abernathy Road and Glenridge Parkway as well as the S.R. 400 entrance and exit ramps to Abernathy Road to accommodate utility activities. These closures will go into effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28. GDOT notes the closures are along Abernathy Road from Mercedes-Benz Drive to Ga. 400, GA-400 northbound exit to Abernathy Road/Sandy Springs (Exit 5B) and GA-400 southbound exit to Abernathy Road (exit 5). Glenridge Parkway will also close at Abernathy Road.

If you must access this area of Sandy Springs, please make note of the following detours:

GA-400 northbound to Abernathy Road: Motorists traveling on GA-400 northbound should use Exit 5A (Abernathy Road towards Dunwoody), turn right on to Peachtree Dunwoody Road and make another right on Mt Vernon Highway. Motorist should continue on Mt Vernon Highway and turn right on to Glenridge Drive. Once on Glernidge, motorists can turn left on to Abernathy Road and continue on Abernathy Road. Motorists needing to access Glenlake Parkway can continue on Glenridge Drive towards Glenlake Parkway.

GA-400 southbound to Abernathy Road: Motorists traveling on Ga. 400 southbound should get off at Exit 5 (Abernathy Road towards Dunwoody) turn left on to Abernathy Road, turn right on to Peachtree Dunwoody Road and turn right on to Mt Vernon Highway. Motorists should continue on Mt Vernon Highway and turn right on to Glenridge Drive. Once there, motorists can turn left on Abernathy Road and continue on Abernathy Road. Motorists needing to access Glenlake Parkway can continue on Glenridge Drive to reach Glenlake Parkway.

Finally traffic pacing is also planned on Ga. 400 northbound and southbound for utility activities. Pacing will occur on the highway from Lenox Road in Buckhead to Northridge Road in Sandy Springs.

Police vehicles will slow traffic to about 15 miles per hour to allow pace vehicles to pull Georgia Power fiber optic lines across S.R. 400. Police officers will be station at entrance ramps to the Ga. 400 to temporarily restrict traffic from entering the Hospitality Highway until the pacing operation ends. Entrance ramps that will be impacted by the pacing operation include Glenridge Connector, I-285 eastbound, I-285 westbound and Hammond Drive and Abernathy Road on Ga. 400.

The pacing is scheduled to take place 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28.
