Funeral On Feb. 3 For Man Killed In Crash

Sandy Springs resident Ray Gibson, 54, died Friday when the vehicle he was driving crashed into Pier 1 Imports in Alpharetta.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — A funeral service will be held this weekend for the Sandy Springs man who died Friday in single-vehicle accident in Alpharetta. Friends and family will bid a final farewell to Howard "Ray" Gibson, Jr. at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3 at McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Forsyth County.

Gibson, 54, died Jan. 25 when a vehicle he was driving crashed into Pier 1 Imports at 6551 North Point Parkway, the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said. According to his obituary, Gibson lived in various countries across the Middle East and Europe. He taught English, established the library and was the program director for a private school called New Horizons in Cairo, Egypt. He also lived in Athens, Greece, and Istanbul, Turkey. Gibson loved to travel and visit countries around Europe, his obituary adds.

"Ray’s passion was reading, and he loved collecting books and was himself also an author," the obit said. "He was a member of the Atlanta Writers Club. He was a kind, extraordinarily generous man who was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed one. He was beloved by many people and will always be remembered for his uplifting, exuberant spirit."

Gibson's family will receive friends from 1 p.m to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the funeral home located at 150 Suwanee Drive in Cumming. The Sandy Springs resident is survived by mother, Patricia Ann Hulsey of Cumming; sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Allen Welch of Suwanee; two nephews, a niece and other cousins and extended family members.
