Funeral Set For Motorcyclist Killed In Sandy Springs Crash

Benjamin Rowan, 29, of Sandy Springs died June 9 in an accident on Roswell Road at Dunwoody Place.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — The Sandy Springs man who was killed in a two vehicle crash over the weekend will be laid to rest on Thursday. The family of Benjamin Rowan, 29, will bid farewell to their loved one at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at Watkinsville First United Methodist Church, according to his obituary.

Rowan died Saturday evening in a two-vehicle collision on Roswell Road near Dunwoody Place. Officers with the Sandy Springs Police Department were dispatched to the crash around 7 p.m. June 9.

A preliminary investigation indicates a Jeep Wrangler was exiting the shopping center when it turned into the path of an approaching motorcycle, said Sandy Springs police spokesperson Sgt. Sam Worsham.

Both vehicles collided and the Jeep overturned. The motorcycle operator, identified as Rowan, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the jeep, 29-year-old Charity Adams also of Sandy Springs, was charged with vehicular homicide in the second degree and making an improper left turn, Sgt. Worsham added.

According to his obituary, Rowan was "happily" employed as a mechanic Mercedes-Benz USA's headquarters in Sandy Springs. He graduated from Oconee County High School and earned his associate's degree from Athens Technical College. Rowan, a native of Athens, was also an avid biker, kayaker, and "graced stages as a bass guitarist/percussionist for several area bands," his obituary adds.

The son of Samuel James Rowan, Jr. (Susan Joy) of Bluffton, South Carolina, and Karen Schirmer Bonds of Winder, Rowan is survived by brother, Chris Rowan (Kenya); nephew, Alex of Winder; grandmother, Anne Rowan; aunt, Judy Cox; and cousins Miriam and Sarah Grace Cox of Watkinsville. He is also survived by aunt, Noell Rowan (Laura Hall) of Carolina Beach, North Carolina; and great-aunt, Lynn Peek of Decatur.
