GA Weather: Freeze Warning, Wind Advisory In Effect Tuesday

A wind advisory is in effect for much of Georgia on Tuesday, which then turns into a freeze advisory overnight into Wednesday morning.

GEORGIA — A rainy Tuesday morning will turn into a windy afternoon, and eventually into below freezing temperatures tonight in north and central Georgia.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory until 7 p.m. Tuesday night. Sustained winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are possible.

A freeze warning will then go into effect from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday for much of north and central Georgia overnight and early Wednesday morning.

For the wind advisory, northwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are anticipated, the Weather Service said.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured or outdoor objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle, the Weather Service said.

A strong cold front will continue to move through the outlook area on Tuesday. Rain may mix at times with sleet and snow, mainly across northern Georgia at elevations above 2,000 feet early Tuesday morning. Additionally, lingering moisture on roadways could create patchy slick spots and black ice as temperatures fall to freezing. Caution should be exercised if traveling in these areas, particularly in the higher elevations.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 24 degrees are expected. Temperatures below freezing will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

The Weather Service advises the public to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above- ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
