Sandy Springs Cops Resign After Off-Duty Domestic Dispute

The three resignations stem from an outing that resulted in one of the officers being charged in an altercation with his ex-wife.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Three officers with the Sandy Springs Police Department have resigned from their respective posts within the agency following a domestic dispute that resulted in the arrest of one of the officers in neighboring Cobb County.

While off-duty on Friday, Nov. 23, Anthony Sandoval was involved in an altercation outside a restaurant at The Battery, a mixed-use attraction near SunTrust Park. SSPD said Sandoval was involved in the altercation with his ex-wife, and Cobb officers were dispatched to the scene to launch an investigation.

Sandoval was arrested and charged by Cobb police with simple battery and domestic violence, and has since submitted his resignation to SSPD, the agency said Wednesday.

Following that incident, Sandy Springs police launched an internal affairs investigation, which also resulted in Capt. David Huffschmidt and Sgt. Amanda Stein voluntarily resigning from the Sandy Springs police force due to "internal policy violations," said Sandy Springs police spokesperson Sgt. Sam Worsham.

Worsham said Sandoval was hired in June 2017. However, Huffschmidt and Stein were considered SSPD veterans, as the former captain joined the force in January 2008 and Stein in July 2006. Huffschmidt served as commander of the North Metro SWAT and SSPD's Special Operations Unit. Stein was the department's certification and inspections manager, according to the agency's website.

SSPD note they were not implicated to be "criminally involved in the domestic incident involving Anthony Sandoval." Two additional employees were interviewed as part of the internal investigation, but will not face any disciplinary action.

This is a developing story, so return to Patch for updates.
