Tornadoes, Hail, Flooding Expected Overnight Across Metro ATL

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook Wednesday night for North and Central GA due to potential tornadoes.

NORTH GEORGIA — The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook Wednesday night for North and Central Georgia due to potential tornadoes.

Scattered to numerous strong to severe storms are expected late Wednesday through Wednesday night with an approaching strong disturbance and frontal system, according to the National Weather Service.

"While there is some potential for severe storms as early as this afternoon, the primary risk will likely be with an area of storms pushing eastward late tonight into Thursday morning," the NWS said. "The main threats will be tornadoes (some of which could be significant or longer tracked), damaging winds over 60 mph, large hail, and flash flooding."

Scattered to numerous strong to severe storms are expected across portions of north and central Georgia on Thursday morning and likely will exit east central Georgia by Thursday afternoon. There will again be the potential for tornadoes, damaging winds over 60 mph, large hail, and flash flooding.

A flood warning continues for Big Creek near Alpharetta, affecting Fulton and Forsyth counties from late Thursday night to late Friday night. Flood stage is at 7-feet. On Wednesday morning, the flood stage was 3-feet and falling, the NWS said. Big Creek is expected to rise to a crest of 7-feet by Friday evening.

Minor flooding of woodlands and fields have begun along the creek between Cumming in Forsyth County, to Alpharetta and Roswell in North Fulton. Flooding has started to affect portions of the Big Creek Greenway near Alpharetta and some portions may become closed with around one foot of water, especially upstream and downstream from Kimball Bridge Road and near Rock Mill Park. Portions of the YMCA Campground off Preston Ridge Road will also begin to flood, the NWS said.

The forecast for metro Atlanta for this week shows:

Wednesday

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 3 p.m., then showers and thunderstorms likely after 3 p.m. Patchy dense fog before 1pm. High near 63. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday night

Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 5 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 59. East wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 2 p.m. Some storms could be severe. High near 69. South wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday night

Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47. West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Friday

Partly sunny, with a high near 59. West wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.
