Former Cobb Real Estate Agent Finds New Home in Prison

According to Cobb District Attorney Vic Reynolds, a former Cobb real estate agent has pleaded guilty to stealing jewelry and other items from homes that were on the market in 2012.

The investigation found that Ray Glen Greene, 49, of Englewood, Fla., used his agent keycode to access homes throughout metro Atlanta for the purpose of stealing jewelry and other items. Eight victims were identified in Cobb, and one of the first homeowners to report jewelry missing was a Cobb Police captain.

Greene entered the captain’s home in November 2012 and took a wedding band, which he then pawned. That ring was recovered, but not before the captain’s wife unexpectedly died of a brain aneurism. 

On Monday, Greene pleaded guilty to eight counts of burglary and eight counts of theft by taking. Several of his victims addressed the court, and Greene later apologized to them.

Greene testified at the sentencing hearing that he lost count of the total number of homes he burglarized. He had not sold a single home in more than a year, and he supported himself completely through the pawning of stolen jewelry. 

“This case was a plea because of the dedicated work of the men and women of the Cobb County Police Department,” Jason Marbutt, the assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case, said in a news release. “They put together an excellent case. Mr. Greene claimed his plea was an acceptance of responsibility. I believe it was a surrender to inevitability.”

Cobb Superior Court Judge Robert D. Leonard II sentenced Greene to 20 years, with eight years to serve in custody. He was also ordered to pay restitution of just over $29,000, most of which has already been paid. Greene must also surrender his real-estate license and is barred from working in real estate or from entering any house in which the homeowner is not present.
