What’s Open, Closed New Year’s Day 2021 In Smyrna

Whether it's the library or your favorite restaurant or retailer, here's a look at what's open in Smyrna on New Year's Day.

SMYRNA, GA — On New Year's Day, residents in Smyrna will leave behind a year marked by unprecedented hardship and challenges. After spending much of the year navigating the once-in-a-lifetime coronavirus pandemic, many will no doubt welcome 2021 with open arms.

As we ring in the new year in our town, many local facilities and government offices will take the day off to recognize the start of the new year.

Here's a look at what’s open and closed in Smyrna on New Year's:

  • Cobb County courts, facilities and offices are closed on Friday.
  • Smyrna garbage pick up: For residents within the city of Smyrna’s city limits, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day routes will be picked up on Wednesday, Dec. 30. No yard waste or large items will be picked up this week.
  • The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority will operate bus service on a Saturday schedule, but rail service and Atlanta streetcar service on Sunday schedules for New Year’s Eve. Bus, rail and Atlanta streetcar services will all operate on their respective Sunday schedules for New Year’s Day.
  • Cobb County Schools students are off from Dec. 21-Jan. 5, all offices are closed.
  • Municipal offices for the city of Smyrna are closed Thursday and Friday.
  • New Year’s Day is a federal holiday and all U.S. Postal Service post offices will be closed. No mail will be delivered or sent. Regular business hours will resume Saturday, Jan. 2.
  • Publix: All stores open at regular hours and close at 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Many stores will close between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. All pharmacies will be closed on New Year’s Day.
  • Kroger: All stores and pharmacies will be open for regular business hours on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Pharmacies will close at 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 3 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

However, if you’re hoping to step out for some socially distanced shopping or dining, there are several stores and chain restaurants that will be open on New Year's Day.

  • Dick’s Sporting Goods: Open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Dillard’s: Some stores open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (varies by mall)
  • Hobby Lobby: Open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Home Depot: Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • IKEA: Open regular hours.
  • Kohl’s: Open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Lowe’s: Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
