Bishop Eddie Long, Head of Georgia Megachurch, Dies at 63
The controversial head of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church died after a battle with cancer.

LITHONIA, GA — Bishop Eddie Long, senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, died at the age of 63 after a fight with an aggressive form of cancer, according to a statement from the church. Long was the head of the megachurch based in Georgia.
"Bishop Long was known as one of the most influential faith leaders in the world," the statement from the church said. "He stood strong as a Kingdom Builder, pioneering leader, and revolutionary mind changer."
Long had a controversial past and was named in a 2010 lawsuit by four former church members alleging that he had coerced them into sexual relations. The case was settled out of court and Long denied the accusations.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Long was absent at several services during the past few months but was present at Christmas and New Years services. His final message to the church was delivered as it welcomed the new year.
"I am confident through my belief in God that my husband is now resting in a better place," First Lady ElderVanessa Long, the bishop's wife, said in the statement. "Although his transition leaves a void for those of us who loved him dearly, we can celebrate and be happy for him, knowing he's at peace."

Long is survived by his wife, four children and three grandchildren.
