A Journey on Canvas of the South's Living Culinary Heritage
Stone Mountain folk artist Olivia Thomason is widely known for her versatility. Over the years, she’s created on canvas childhood memories, global sporting events like the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics, Christmas cards honoring the Atlanta Braves, public murals and many commissions for families, prestigious law firms, corporations and charities.
One stands out as a venture into the delicious world of food and travel.
“The Gourmet Highway” is a whimsicalculinary journey throughout the South,” she revealed, “with stops in Memphis for barbecue, Nashville to dine near the Ryman Auditorium, elegant dinners in New Orleans, Montgomery, Austin and many more, with Key West as the destination.”

Key West becomes a backyard feast at Ernest Hemingway’s home. Papa, as he was often called, knew and mastered good dining and maintained Florida’s largest residential wine cellar. Celebrities were regular guests.
“Doc Lawrence asked me to produce a painting incorporating all this and much more for his magazine stories throughout the country and his weekly broadcasts and podcasts on iHeart Radio Network.” It took six months, she added.

The amazing detail qualifies the work as likely one-of-a-kind in popular art. “I’ve thought about producing a giclee print for someone’s den, bar or kitchen. It certainly qualifies as a conversation starter.” Ms. Thomason said that the scene at Hemingway’s home includes Ray Charles, Ava Gardner, Hank Williams, Tennessee Williams, Elvis, and other icons of popular culture.
David Thomas, the Artistic Director of Art Station conducted an interview with Olivia Thomason. It is an excellent review of her career as an artist and citizen:
