MLK Bell Planned Atop Stone Mountain Memorial
Replica Liberty Bell will "ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia," honoring a line in King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
Stone Mountain Memorial officials will be installing a replica Liberty Bell on the top of the granite landmark. The addition will honor Martin Luther King Jr. and a line in his “I Have a Dream” speech: “Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.”
The bell will, in fact, sound from the mountaintop, according to WSB-TV, but how often hasn’t been determined.
After first reporting the plans of the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, the AJC notes that public response is mixed.

That’s not surprising considering the ongoing public debate regarding Stone Mountain and other public memorials to Confederate soldiers.
The large Confederate carvings on the side of Stone Mountain depict Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, as well as another carving of the Confederate flag.

Stone Mountain Park plans other additions, including a permanent exhibit on African-American soldiers in the Civil War. The park additions will be funded by parking and entrance fees, according to the AJC.
