AHeights Boy Wins Top Prize At National Rubik's Cube Competition

Parth Pawar, 10, won the gold medal in his division during the first-ever event over the weekend in Philadelphia.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — A 10-year-old Arlington Heights boy won the gold medal in his division in the first-ever North American School Rubik's Cube Championship over the weekend. Parth Pawar won $5,000 in the competition that was part of the annual Hasbro Gaming Championships that ran Saturday and Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Parth competed in the tournament's elementary school division, and his fastest time solving the puzzle cube was 14.52 seconds, according to the championship. To advance in each of the three divisions – elementary school, middle school and high school — competitors needed to complete four solves, with the slowest solving time dropped and the remaining times averaged. The contestants with the top six average times then moved on to the final round.

More than 50 people between the ages of 8 to 18 competed in all three divisions of the Rubik's Cube competition. The Hasbro Gaming Championships also included 200 Scrabble players facing off in head-to-head matches.
