AHeight's Jimmy Garoppolo Out Rest Of 49ers' Season With Torn ACL

"Jimmy is a tough person. He'll bounce back from this," 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday.

SAN FRANCISCO — The 2018 NFL season is over for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo after an MRI revealed that the Arlington Heights native had a torn left ACL, the team announced Monday. He suffered the non-contact injury trying to stretch out a run during the closing minutes of a 38-27 loss Sunday to the Kansas City Chiefs.

"He’s down, just as everyone would expect," 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said concerning Garoppolo's reaction to the injury. "Jimmy was real excited about this year, and we were real excited to go through it with him. Got to go through a few games, but I know he was very disappointed. I know it was hard for him last night, it was hard today, and it’ll be hard over these next few weeks. But Jimmy is a tough person. He’ll bounce back from this, and he’ll be ready to go next year.”

The Rolling Meadows High School grad now will be placed on San Francisco's injured reserve list, and he will probably be sidelined for around nine months. Doctors need to wait for the swelling on the knee to go down before they start treatment, which will most likley begin in a week or two, Shanahan said.

Garoppolo, 26, was hurt during a third-and-goal run from the Chiefs' 20 with 5:35 left in the game. He already had gained 13 yards down the sideline, but instead of stepping out of bounds, the quarterback tried to grab more yardage, landing awkwardly on his left leg before being hit by cornerback Steven Johnson.

Limping to the 49ers sideline and medical tent, Garoppolo eventually was carted to the locker room. Backup C.J. Beathard finished the rest of the game under center for San Francisco.

The Week 3 injury marred what appeared to be another solid performance for Garoppolo, who had a shaky start to the season, throwing three interceptions and completing only 45.5 percent of his passes in a Sept. 9 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Before leaving Sunday's game, he had two touchdowns and no interceptions, with a passer rating of 114.7.

"It sucks," 49ers tight end George Kittle told ESPN concerning Garoppolo's injury. "Jimmy is a great quarterback, the leader of our team. But it's football, and it's next man in. That's just the nature of the game."

Family members spent some quiet time with Garoppolo outside the visitors locker room at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium following the game, according to ESPN. San Francisco general manager John Lynch and owner Jed York also met with the quarterback, who was on crutches, before the team left the stadium.

On Monday, Garoppolo received a bit of public support and encouragement from former teammate New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Not only did Garoppolo back up Brady for nearly four seasons before being traded to the 49ers in October 2017, but the quarterbacks also share an agent.

"I feel terrible for him," Brady said during a Boston-area radio interview. "It’s a tough injury. I feel bad for Jimmy. … He’s someone that I really like and have been friends with since the day he got here. It just sucks to have to go through that."

In February, Garoppolo and the 49ers agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million deal. He also signed an endorsement deal over the summer with Jordan Brand, the umbrella label for Michael Jordan's line of Nike shoes and sports gear.
