AMC Theatres: Mount Prospect, Schaumburg Locations Reopening

The movie theater chain said Tuesday all of its theaters plan to reopen in July. The theaters have been closed due to the coronavirus.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — In somewhat of a reversal of last week's announcement it might not survive the coronavirus pandemic, AMC Theatres said Tuesday it plans to reopen almost all of its U.S. and U.K theaters in July. The company said in a press release that the decision is "to be positioned to showcase" the Warner Bros. release of Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" on July 17, followed by Disney's live action, "Mulan," the following week.

Locations in nearby Mount Prospect and Schaumburg are expected to reopen.

  • AMC Randhurst 12 is located at Randhurst Village, 200 Randhurst Village Drive, Mount Prospect.
  • AMC Streets of Woodfield 20, Streets of Woodfield, 601 N Martingale Road #105, Schaumburg

AMC Theatres said June 3 it has "substantial doubt" the company can remain in business after the coronavirus pandemic forced the closure of all of its locations. The company also announced Tuesday that total revenues were $941.5 million for the first quarter, with a net loss of $2.1 million due to the pandemic.

AMC Theatres noted "a lot can change between now and July," in the statement. The company said it would take the following steps, "aimed at optimizing the timeliness, safety and profitability" of the reopenings:

  • Maintaining close contact with local, national and international officials to understand and coordinate the timing and requirements under which we can reopen.
  • Consulting with current and former faculty from the prestigious Harvard University School of Public Health to seek guidance from the best scientists and experts on how best to create a safe environment for our guests and associates. Personal protection equipment, cleaning protocols, limited theater capacity, blocked seating, and other strategies are all being planned. The company looking at high tech solutions as well, to aid in its sanitization techniques including the use of electrostatic sprayers, HEPA vacuums and wherever possible upgraded MERV 13 air ventilation filters.
  • Establishing a protocol partnership with the global leader in all things clean, The Clorox Company (NYSE:CLX), as they advise the company as to how it can make the theater environments as safe and clean as possible.
  • Educating guests so that they understand the actions the company is taking with their safety in mind.
  • Implementing aggressive marketing communications and promotional activity aimed at jumpstarting consumer demand.
  • Reducing the company's cost structure, intensely examining every category of its expenditures to lower spending wherever possible.
