ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — A 44-year-old Georgia man is in critical condition after his car crashed Sunday night into the Arlington Heights Police Department's new station, according to authorities. No one was in the station, which is in the final stages of construction, but the accident did cause significant damage to the building, police said.

The crash happened just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the new police HQ, 200 E. Sigwalt St., according to police. The man was speeding in a black 2015 Volkswagen GTI when he lost control of the car and overturned, slamming into the front of the station, police said

The driver — who was the only person in the car — was trapped in the car, and first responders needed to extricate him from the vehicle, police said. He was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in critical but stable condition.
