Hamantash Baking Event
Local Baking Class Gets Arlington Heights's residents in the Purim Spirit

Just in time for the upcoming holiday of Purim, the Chabad Jewish Center of Arlington Heights will be holding a Hamantash Baking event on Sunday, March 10th. Participants will learn the art of preparing Hamantash pastries, the three cornered traditional Purim treat, while learning about the holiday.
Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day.” The Hamantash, named after the anti-semitic Haman, is a traditional holiday pastry with various fillings such as poppy seeds, prune, date paste or apricot jam.
“We are excited to be bringing this holiday tradition to Arlington Heights”, said Mrs. Chaikie Kotlarsky, Program Director of the Chabad Jewish Center. “The hands on experience will definitely be enjoyed by all”.

What is the holiday of Purim?
The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. It begins this year after sundown on March 20 and ends at nightfall on March 21. The holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in Ancient Persia from Haman's plot "to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day." It is observed by public readings of the Megillah, or Scroll of Esther, to recount the story of the Purim miracle, sending food gifts to friends, giving gifts of money to the poor and enjoying a festive Purim meal.
