A romantic dinner

Arlington Heights has lots of restaurants that offer a variety of experiences and specialties including Indian, Irish, Italian, Russian and Mexican. Discover Arlington Heights has restaurants broken down into categories that make it easier to pick and chose where to celebrate the most romantic day of the year. If you can’t get in Thursday, try reserving your seats over Valentine’s Day weekend.

A really romantic dinner

Nothing melts a heart more than seeing your significant other donning an apron and whipping up dinner. Really. It doesn’t have to be fancy and can be a simple as grilling a steak. Wally Tenhoopen, owner of Thuringer Gourmet Meat Market, has the perfect steak along with shrimp and lobster tails. “We’ve got everything,” he said. Fillets are popular for Valentine’s Day. “(Fillet) is always tender. A nice strip is always good, it’s a guys type of steak because it’s got more flavor and it’s a larger steak,” said Tenhoopen, who is a longtime Arlington Heights businessman. “They are all good to throw on the grill.”

You could also learn together, and look into a cooking class at Piatti Pronti, or hire Chef Lucia to come to your home to make a beautiful meal for you and your sweetheart (may be too late to book her for Valentine's Day!) but a great gift all the same.

A decadent dessert

Chocolate covered strawberries. Chocolate wine. Artisan chocolate. Chocolate cake. Anything chocolate will do. Lindt Chocolate, at 325 E. Palatine Road, Arlington Heights, and Fannie Mae, 130 E. Wing St., Arlington Heights, have a wide variety of choices. Or check a number of bakeries in Discover Arlington Heights and pick up a special cake, cookies and other desserts.

A romantic movie

Think chick flick, like “The Notebook,” “Sleepless in Seattle,” or “Titanic.” A new movie out on Valentine’s Day is “Safe Haven,” based on a book by Nicholas Sparks, who also is the author of “The Notebook.” It stars Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough. There is also a movie you wouldn’t expect to be released on Valentine’s Day but is a bold choice: “A Good Day to Die Hard.”  It is the latest installment of the “Die Hard” series starring Bruce Willis. It's a little different so make sure your sweetie is a Die Hard fan or it may not go over too well! For times and movie theaters, check moviefone.com.
