Man Killed After Car Strikes Tree In Arlington Heights

The 24-year-old Des Plaines man was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the one-car accident, according to eyewitnesses.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — A 24-year-old Des Plaines man died as a result of injuries sustained in a one-car accident Saturday in Arlington Heights. First responders found the man, who was driving a 2001 silver Honda Odyssey minivan, entrapped and unresponsive upon arrival at the crash scene on Algonquin Road, west of Kennicott Avenue. He was pronounced dead shortly after being extricated from his car at around 6:30 p.m.

The man's identity has not been released at this time pending notification of family. There were no passengers in the minivan and no other vehicles were involved in the accident, according to a press release from the Arlington Heights Police Department.

Several witnesses told police that they saw the minivan traveling eastbound on Algonquin at what appeared to be a high rate of speed. Suddenly, the minivan struck and crossed the raised center median, crossed both westbound lanes of Algonquin, traversed the parkway and continued through a fence and into a residential backyard. The minivan rapidly decelerated after striking a tree.

Firefighters and paramedics from the Arlington Heights Fire Department were first on the scene and said the man succumbed to multiple traumatic injuries received upon impact. An official manner and cause will be determined by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to police.

Westbound Algonquin Road between Kennicott and Wilkie was closed to traffic for five hours. Traffic opened in both directions just after midnight, Sunday. An investigation is ongoing.
