Rabid Bat Found In Elk Grove Village

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL — After a rabid bat was discovered last week, Elk Grove Village officials are reminding residents to keep dogs, cats and ferrets on a leash when outside their homes. The bat was found on June 23 in the vicinity of the 200 Block of Clearmont Drive.

The bat was submitted for rabies examination and the Illinois State Public Health laboratory determined it to be rabid, according to a news release. People that have been exposed to or bitten by a bat should contact their doctor immediately.

Village officials are telling residents to keep their dogs, cats, and ferrets on a leash when outside their homes. Animals that do not have a current rabies vaccination should be inoculated with a rabies vaccine.

Residents are advised not to handle any bats, skunks or other wild animals. If any bats or skunks are found down or dead on a property or roadway, call the Cook County Department of Animal Control at 708-974-6140.
