100K Coronavirus Vaccines Administered In Kane County

KANE COUNTY, IL — Kane County reached a new milestone in its push to vaccinate more than a half-million residents, with the county on pace to administer its 100,000th dose of the coronavirus vaccine Thursday.

More than 99,000 doses had been administered in Kane County by Wednesday, according to statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health. With Kane County giving out an average of more than 2,500 doses daily for the past week, it is all but certain to pass the 100,000-dose barrier Thursday.

More than 25,000 people in Kane County are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, representing 4.75 percent of the county’s 534,000-plus population, the state’s data shows.

Vaccine administration in Kane County has sped up considerably over the past two days after a downturn following several February snowstorms. The seven-day rolling average of doses administered in Kane County has grown from 1,880 on Feb. 23 to 2,866 by Wednesday, according to IDPH statistics.

More than 5,300 doses were administered Feb. 24 in Kane County, by far the largest single-day increase.

Kane County’s vaccine rollout has been beset by racial disparities since the first doses were administered Dec. 16, the state’s data shows.

More than 72 percent of all coronavirus vaccine doses administered in the county by Wednesday were given to white people, who make up about 57 percent of the county's population, according to IDPH and U.S. Census Bureau data.

Mass Vaccination Clinic In Aurora Spotlights Racial Inequities

Latino residents have received about 10.8 percent of all doses administered, despite representing just under a third of the county's population, according to those statistics.

Black residents, who make up about 6 percent of Kane County's population, have received just 3.08 percent of all doses administered there, the state's data shows.

About 44 percent of the nearly 100,000 doses administered in Kane County were given to residents 65 or older, while about 56 percent went to people between 16 and 64, according to IDPH statistics.
