250 Dead In Aurora After Coronavirus Pandemic’s 1st Year
Mayor Richard Irvin will host a memorial ceremony Tuesday night, one year after he declared a state of emergency due to the coronavirus.
AURORA, IL — Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin is set to host a brief ceremony Tuesday night to memorialize hundreds of city residents who died from COVID-19 over the past year.
Irvin declared a state of emergency in Aurora on March 16, 2020, two days after the city reported its first confirmed case of the coronavirus.

One year on from Irvin’s emergency declaration, 250 Aurora residents have died after contracting the coronavirus and almost 20,000 people have tested positive for the virus, according to the city’s data. That includes more than 8,000 positive tests in 60505 ZIP code on Aurora’s East Side.
Some relatives of the 250 Aurora residents who died from COVID-19 are expected to join Irvin at the memorial, which starts at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Irvin will speak about how Aurora has weathered the coronavirus pandemic for the past year and his plans to restore the city, according to a news release.
Aurora officials are installing 250 white flags in front of City Hall to honor residents who died from COVID-19. Families and visitors will place white roses in front of the flags after the memorial, the release states.

Irvin was among the first Aurora residents to contract the coronavirus. Kane County health officials announced the mayor’s positive test on March 27, 2020, less than two weeks after the city’s first case.
