The election spotlight shines brightest every four years when citizens head to the polls to elect a President. However, most decisions that impact our daily lives are determined at the local level, so voting in local elections is even more critical. Join me, Judd Lofchie, as I look at the top three reasons you should vote in Aurora’s local election on April 6th.
Mayor/ City Council: Our local officials make decisions on how our taxes are spent within our city. The Mayor determines the budget, who gets hired, and how taxpayer money will be spent. The City Council votes on the Mayor’s spending plan. Will money be spent on projects the residents support? Will the spending plan result in an increase in your taxes? When corrupt officials are put in power, the results can be catastrophic.

School Board: A large portion of our local taxes goes to fund education, and our school boards decide how those dollars get spent. In addition to responsibility for hiring the school principal, school boards set policies, curricula, and budgets. They make decisions on funding for music programs, athletic programs, and set the school calendar. The quality of our schools affects both our community at large and the lives of individuals within it.
Park District: Would you like to see an improvement to our city parks? How about a dog park or a walking track? The people elected to the board of the Fox Valley Park District determine where new parks will go, which parks will be improved, and how our bike and walking paths will be maintained.

The stakes of our local elections may not be highlighted in our media in the way our national elections are, however, the consequences of our local elections will impact our daily lives and the lives of our families for many years to come. These three taxing bodies make up 80%-90% of our property taxes.
The most important thing we can do as citizens is to make our voices heard on every race on the ballot! Vote on April 6th!
