KANE COUNTY, IL — Coronavirus cases in Kane County grew faster than ever over the past two weeks, during which more than 6,000 new cases were confirmed among county residents.

Kane County has reported 6,081 new cases since Oct. 28, according to statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health. The county’s previous 6,081 cases were recorded over a period of two months (Aug. 27 to Oct. 27).

The 6,000-plus cases confirmed over the past two weeks represent more than a quarter of Kane County’s 23,179 total cases, as of Tuesday, according to the state’s statistics.

More than 1,000 new cases were recorded Friday, which is by far Kane County’s largest single-day increase.

Prior to Oct. 28, Kane County had only twice recorded single-day increases of more than 300 new cases. In the 14 days since, the county has done that a dozen times, public health data shows.

Over the past two weeks, 20 Kane County residents have died after testing positive for the coronavirus, according to the state’s data.

Though Kane County’s average daily testing capacity has roughly doubled over the past seven weeks, confirmed cases have grown at a much faster rate, causing its positivity rate to spike to 16.7 percent Saturday.

The county’s average testing capacity grew from about 1,400 tests per day on Sept. 25 to over 2,700 tests by Tuesday. Over the same period, the county’s seven-day rolling average of new cases grew from about 70 cases per day to almost 550, public health data shows.

Kane County is set to face new “Tier 2” restrictions starting Wednesday after the positivity rate in Region 8 — made up of Kane and DuPage counties — continued to surge despite additional mitigations in place since Oct. 23.

Illinois officials imposed Tier 1 restrictions Oct. 23 on Region 8, including an indoor dining ban on restaurants and bars, as well as a limit on social gatherings.

Kane Co. Public Health Director To Retire Amid Pandemic

Tier 2 restrictions will limit party sizes for outdoor dining to six people instead of 10, while gatherings and groups participating in organized recreational activities will be limited to 10 people instead of 25. The new limits do not apply to students learning in person or fitness centers, according to the IDPH.

The overall positivity rate in Region 8 rose to 14.2 percent Saturday, more than twice the 6.5 percent threshold for Tier 1 restrictions to be removed. DuPage County reported a 12.8 percent rate positivity rate Saturday, public health data shows.
