The students of West Aurora are going to find out! They are giving up their cell phones for 24 hours to raise money and awareness for an incredible non-profit organization called Watts of Love. This amazing team of world changing pioneers based in Downers Grove, IL brings solar lights and education to the nations after a natural disaster strikes. They also target the poorest people groups around the globe and introduce solar light as a resource to elevate those living in poverty & darkness. Friday, September 21 Nancy Economou, founder and president of Watts of Love, is speaking to the student body in an 8th hour assembly and firing them up with a message that they were born to be world changers! She will be laying out a simple platform called GO DARK GIVE LIGHT which will demonstrate how they are the first generation in history with the ability to eradicate darkness and bring light, hope, and love to those around the world living in unimaginable conditions.

So, smack dab in the middle of homecoming, West Aurora High School students will be invited to turn off their phones Thursday, September 27 at 7:30PM and turn them back on together during the second quarter of the homecoming football game September 28 at 7:30PM! Can you imagine a generation selflessly going dark to light the nations? Well, that is exactly what is happening here! What started as an idea in an after-school club has taken off.

Their goal is to raise $1000.00 for Watts of Love and to challenge other schools and youth groups across the nation to step up, go to the Watts of Love website, and sign up to GO DARK!

West wants to inspire the nation to see Watts of Love’s $50,000 Go Dark Give Light goal fully funded by Christmas! They are also challenging families to turn off their phones this Thanksgiving and Go Dark and get sponsors for every hour they stay off their phones! If you are reading this article on your phone and cannot even entertain the thought of not using your phone for 24 hours, then this is exactly what you need to get plugged back into humanity. These students believe that their selfless act will have a ripple effect on their school, their city, and the nation! Help us make that a reality, because the truth is, there has always been a resource more important than our electronic devices, and that is each other! It’s time to Go Dark!
