Kane Co. One Of Few Regions In IL To See Population Growth: Study

KANE COUNTY, IL — Kane County is among the few counties in Illinois that saw a population growth over the past 10 years, according to a study by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

Of the state's 102 counties, just nine saw growth in the past decade: Kane, DuPage, Will, Kendall, Champaign, Monroe, Grundy, Williamson and McLean.

The U.S. Census data for 2020 is yet to be released, but CMAP said it based its findings on five-year estimates from the American Community Survey.

Kane County has a population of about 531,400, according to the study. Between 2010 and 2019, the county's population grew by about 9,500, an increase of 1.82 percent, according to the study.

Kendall County saw the largest rate of population growth, with a 6.65 percent increase between 2010 and 2019, the study shows. Will County's population grew 1.06 percent to 682,000, and DuPage County's grew by 0.28 percent to about 926,500.

However, the study showed troubling trends for the state as a whole.

Illinois lost nearly 80,000 residents in 2020, the seventh straight year of population decline, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
