Patch caught up with Melissa Peterson, center director of KinderCare Education, to learn more about her work in child care and education, as well as the brand-new KinderCare center opening in Aurora in spring 2020.

Patch: How long have you been doing business in town?

Peterson: KinderCare has been in the community for more than 50 years.

Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?

Peterson: Ever since I can remember, I have always loved working with children. I went to college for elementary education and taught kindergarten for five years before moving into the ECE (early childhood education) field.

Patch: If you had to sum up your business mission to a stranger in five words or phrases, what would those words be?

Peterson: Quality care, education, inclusion, welcoming, great relationships

Patch: What’s the biggest challenge or most difficult moment you’ve faced in your job?

Peterson: One of the most challenging aspects of my job is helping a parent leave their child in the care of someone else for the first time. I do everything in my power to make them feel as comfortable as possible — because, as a working mom of three, I know how hard it can be.

Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Peterson: The most satisfying part of my job is being able to do what I absolutely love every day!

Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others?

Peterson: My staff works together to make our center warm and welcoming. We go above and beyond for the children in our care and respond to the unique needs and interests of every child.

Patch: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given when it comes to success?

Peterson: The best piece of advice I have ever been given when it comes to success is to take pride in my work and treat others how I would like to be treated. I have always prided myself on building great relationships with families and staff at my center.

Patch: Are there any new projects or endeavors you’re working on that you’re extra excited about?

Peterson: We are currently in the process of opening a brand-new KinderCare location in Aurora! We can't wait to host an Open House to welcome the community to see our new building. Patch: Do you have any events coming up in your community?

Peterson: About one month prior to opening, we will host multiple open houses for the public to come in and see the building and meet our staff, as well as learn about our programs. In the meantime, we have been getting involved in the community and are attending multiple events such as the Children’s Museum Bubble Bash, Oswego Christmas Walk, Vaughan Athletic Center Family Fun Fair and the Oswego Hometown Expo.
