Low Turnout In Aurora Twp. Primaries; Most Races Still Undecided

More than 200 mail-in ballots have not been counted yet, which could delay final results by two weeks, according to a report.

AURORA, IL — Less than 1,800 Democrats in Aurora Township headed to the polls Tuesday to decide several primary races, a dismal turnout of just 2.85 percent.

Aurora Township Democrats were tasked with choosing their nominees for the April 6 election for several offices: supervisor, clerk and highway commissioner, as well as four trustee positions.

Kane County Clerk John Cunningham told the Aurora Beacon-News that 226 mail-in ballots have not yet been returned. That could delay final results by about two weeks, with margins in many of the races under 200 votes.

In the race for the Democratic nomination for Aurora Township supervisor, William Catching leads Alex Arroyo by 184 votes (960 to 776), according to unofficial election results.

Penny “Cassidy” Alexander holds a lead of just 50 votes (861 to 811) over Juan Thomas for the Democratic nomination for Aurora Township clerk.

Nine candidates were on the ballot Tuesday seeking four Democratic nominations for Aurora Township trustee.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the four leading vote-getters were Dolores Hicks (902), David Moore (836), Sam Nunez (835) and Juanita Wells (767).

Three other candidates could surge into the top four if they earn enough votes from the 226 outstanding mail-in ballots.

Bonnie Kunkel is just 11 votes behind Wells, with 756, while Jennifer Jaquez-Fearday has 678 votes. Sharain “Sherry” Spears has 545 votes, putting her 222 votes away from the final nomination spot, as of Wednesday.

Nelly Valencia and Nadia Kanhai are mathematically out of the race, after picking up 503 and 459 votes, respectively, according to unofficial election results.
