Teens Lead Aurora Cops On SUV Chase

Four teens knocked down a stop sign in Aurora, stopped, then two tried fleeing on foot.

AURORA, IL — Four teens were questioned and two were charged in a Nov. 19 vehicle pursuit. Police were patrolling a neighborhood just east of downtown when they heard gunshots just after 3 p.m. They chased down a black SUV headed east on Fourth Avenue going at a “high rate of speed,” police say. The 17-year-old driver of the SUV struck a stop sign, then stopped in the 1200 block of Gates Street.

That's when a 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy “bolted” from the SUV, police say, but were immediately caught. There was also a 15-year-old boy who stayed in the car with the driver. Police found a loaded .45 caliber handgun on the floor, in plain view, which was later tied to the 16-year-old. He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and taken to the Kane County Youth Home. The driver was charged with two felony counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, along with several traffic citations. He was released to a parent. Police learned that the gun was stolen earlier this year in an Aurora home burglary.

There were no injuries. The 19-year-old and the 15 year-old were released without charges. “Further charges have not been ruled out pending the outcome of forensics,” cops say.
