Trump Tweets Endorsement For Oberweis In Race Against Underwood

ILLINOIS — President Donald Trump recently threw his support behind Republican Jim Oberweis’ campaign for U.S. Congress, tweeting his “complete and total endorsement” for the state senator’s bid to unseat Democratic Rep. Lauren Underwood.

Oberweis “will be a terrific Congressman for Illinois!” Trump tweeted Wednesday. “A successful businessman, he will Create Jobs, Lower Taxes, Defend Law & Order, and Protect your Second Amendment from the Radical Left. Jim has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

Travis Akin, spokesperson for Oberweis’ congressional campaign, told Patch the state senator and businessman was “honored” to have Trump’s endorsement.

The endorsement shows voters in Illinois’ 14th U.S. House District that Oberweis “is the candidate that can work with the president” to craft good economic policies and create jobs, Akin said.

Like Trump, Oberweis believes the “most important thing is recovering from the government-mandated shutdown” of businesses and schools, Akin said.

Addressing the coronavirus pandemic is also important to Oberweis, Akin said, but the candidate “does not believe in government mandates that require people to live a certain way or act a certain way.”

“Jim Oberweis takes the pandemic seriously, but we have to have a balanced approach,” Akin said. “We can’t just shut things down again. The cure can’t be worse than the virus.”

Underwood responded to Trump’s endorsement Wednesday by asking supporters to donate to her campaign’s “final push.”

“We shouldn’t be surprised that Donald Trump endorsed my opponent,” Underwood tweeted. “Since #IL14 was carried by the GOP in 2016, we need to be ready to fight back.”
