Bolingbrook Honors Heroes with Three Memorial Day Services
For the first time since 2019, Bolingbrook brings back the regularly scheduled outdoor Memorial Day Services.

Bolingbrook, IL – After having to adapt the in person services in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, all three regularly scheduled outdoor ceremonies returned to Bolingbrook on May 31st, 2021. The services took place at Boardman Cemetery, Hillcrest Cemetery, and Town Center.
Boardman Cemetery, located in the Heritage Creek subdivision off Royce Road and Paxson Drive, is only open to the public for special occasions. Members of the Bolingbrook Historic Preservation Commission volunteered to give public tours throughout the day following the service. The cemetery, which is the final resting-place for many of the first settlers of DuPage Township, dates back to 1832. At least one Civil War veteran is buried at Boardman.
Representatives of VFW Post 5917 and American Legion Post 1288 presented the colors and organized all three ceremonies. Bolingbrook Police and Fire Honor Guards presented a weapons salute and played Amazing Grace, and the local junior ROTC program as well as the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America also participated in the ceremonies. Others in attendance included: Mayor Mary Alexander-Basta, the Board of Trustees, the Executive Department, and Department Heads.

The largest attended ceremony took place at the Veterans Memorial outside of Town Center. This service will be made available for rebroadcast on Bolingbrook Community Television as well as other digital platforms.
At the Town Center Service Mayor Mary Alexander-Basta said, “I'm forever grateful to those that gave their lives for our country. The freedoms we experience on a daily basis is thanks to those that fought for those freedoms. And while we dedicate this day to remembering and honoring those service men and women who gave their lives, my challenge to you is to recognize their sacrifice throughout the year.”
