Bolingbrook's The Sacred Succulent Is An 'Escape From Reality'
The Sacred Succulent officially opened its doors July 3 at The Promenade Bolingbrook.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — Within a week, Bolingbrook's newest store has won over the community with its unique concept. The Sacred Succulent officially opened its doors July 3 at The Promenade Bolingbrook, and according to founder and owner Thomas Stice, this decision was made "on a whim."
"We had anticipated opening up the following week, but we were so excited we couldn’t wait anymore," Stice said. "There were several nights that week when we were there until 4 a.m., just making sure we were ready."
Despite the COVID-19 outbreak, Stice said they have been fortunate, receiving a steady flow of customers. Not only is this his first brick and mortar store, but it is also Illinois' first Plant Bar — a place where people can go, pick out extravagant plants, pick a planter and create aesthetic arrangements with the help of the staff. Those above the age of 21 can also grab a drink while potting their plants.

"I was actually kind of shocked at how many people have taken so naturally to the whole concept," he said. "We have barely sold any plants in their nursery pots. Everyone wants to pick a planter, get their hands dirty and make a beautiful arrangement."
The store is scheduling a class every week with a different theme. Stice is considering more ideas such as a tea party class where guests will plant in an actual tea cup, a DIY fairy garden, macramé hanger class and so. During each class, he talks about plant care, provides fun facts about the plants and help with building the planters and picking plants.

"They end up being so much fun and I think it’s a great way for us to connect with our customers," he said.
To ensure safety, Stice said they've added an extra work table so that customers can distance themselves, and his team members are constantly cleaning the tables and the store in general, along with wearing masks and "encouraging our customers to do so as well."
Whether someone is a connoisseur of plants or not, he said The Sacred Succulent is an "experience unlike any other." Just seeing all the rare imported plants and surrounding oneself with nature is a calming, relaxing experience, according to him.
"If anything, being in a room that is so heavily populated with plants produces some really clean, fresh air," he said.
He started The Sacred Succulent last October out of his garage in Bolingbrook, selling exclusively online to a customer base almost entirely on Facebook. Converting a one-man online store to a multi-employee brick and mortar establishment is challenging, and having his own establishment still feels quite "surreal" to Stice.
All the hard work however pays off when he receives all the "amazing feedback" from his customers.
"Everyone walks in and you can see them light up. Their smiles show through their masks," he said. "I think as we grow and especially the time during the pandemic we lose the sense of letting loose and playing in the mud, and this brings out the kid in everyone. I think it’s a nice escape from reality."
