Costco Will Bring Back Free Samples; 20 Locations In IL

ILLINOIS —More than two months ago, Costco halted their practice of handing out free samples amid the growing coronavirus pandemic. Now, as phase 3 of the Restore Illinois reopening plan begins — and other states are opening up to a greater degree — the company said it is planning to resume free samples. But there will be new rules in place.

Free samples are scheduled to return to Costco stores in mid-June, CFO Richard Galanti said this week during a company earnings call. But Galanti didn't offer specifics on what the new rules will be when the coveted free food returns.

"I can't tell you any more, but it's — needless to say — not going to be where you go and just pick up an open sample with your fingers," he said, according to Business Insider, which reported that the temporary halting of free samples resulted in the layoff of thousands of sample servers who work for a third-party product demonstration company.

Galanti also said some — but not all — menu items have been added back to store food courts, which have been offering a limited menu. Earlier this month, Costco announced that food court orders are available for takeout only and seating is not available, telling customers, "Please ask Costco Food Court employees for available condiments."

The Costco website lists 20 locations in Illinois, and there are plans to open even more.
