Tornado Watch, Flood Warning: Chicago Weather

Severe weather is expected to move back into the area Saturday night.

A tornado watch was in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday for LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Lee and Livingston counties in northern Illinois, was according to the National Weather Service.

Plus, rain-swollen rivers are expected to get even higher with more storms in the forecast this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning until 2 a.m. Tuesday for the east branch of the DuPage River at Bolingbrook, as well as other Will County towns including Plainfield and Shorewood, the west branch of the DuPage River near Warrenville, the Fox River in Montgomery and the Des Plaines River at Riverside affecting Cook County.

A flash flood warning is also in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday for Cook, DeKalb, La Salle, DuPage, Kane, Kendall Lee and Will counties. The NWS offers these safety tips:

  • Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
  • Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
  • Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

In Shorewood, the river is expected to hit 8.5 feet, above the flood stage of 6.5 feet, by Sunday afternoon. The water is expected to fall below flood stage by Monday evening.

The NWS said nearly three inches of rain was expected to fall by the time showers end on Sunday.

There is an enhanced risk of storms for most of Chicagoland Saturday afternoon and evening, with strong storms expected between 6 p.m. and midnight.

The weather forced the cancellation of Cubs/Dodgers outdoor viewing parties at The Park at Wrigley on Saturday for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. Game 2 is slated for Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
