Longtime Bolingbrook Detective, Ex- Shorewood Officer Dies At 68

Daniel Peter Toomey started his career as an officer in Shorewood, volunteered with the Troy fire department and served 31 years with BPD.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — The Village of Bolingbrook is mourning the death of a longtime Bolingbrook police detective. Daniel Peter Toomey, 68, died June 29, according to the village.

"Dan started his career as a policeman in Shorewood, where he also volunteered for the Troy Township Fire Department," the village said on Facebook. Toomey went on to serve with the Bolingbrook Police Department for 31 years, earning the rank of detective, before retiring in 2010.

Dan dedicated his life serving others. He was a leader/mentor for BSA Law Enforcement Explorer post #38 of the Bolingbrook P.D. for over 20 years. He remained active with the Explorers even after retirement. Dan was also a volunteer dive master for a high adventure water rescue team in Downers Grove. He enjoyed carpentry/woodworking and electrical work and was always happy to help his friends using these skills. He also had a deep interest in Indy car racing.
Above all else, Dan will be remembered as a loving and caring husband and father. Dan is survived by his wife of 33 years, Christine and children Lisa Smith and Michael Fontaine.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Bolingbrook on Tuesday.

According to his obituary, Toomey was a Chicago native and a longtime Plainfield resident.
