Man Shot After Catching Burglars Breaking Into Vehicle: Cops

Bolingbrook police said the victim exchanged gunshots with the vehicle burglars after hearing a noise and going outside to investigate it.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — Police said a Bolingbrook man was shot in the stomach after exchanging gunfire with vehicle burglars outside his home in the 600 block of Cambridge Way late Monday.

Officers were dispatched to the home around 11:45 p.m. to find the victim with a gunshot wound to the stomach. He told police he was inside his home when he heard a noise outside and saw that the dome light in his vehicle was on.

Police said the resident grabbed his handgun and went outside to investigate and found more than one person who appeared to be burglarizing his vehicle. One of the burglars started shooting, according to police, and the victim returned fire. The offenders fled before police arrived.

The victim remained hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday morning.

Police told Patch their initial finding is that there were three vehicle burglars, but no descriptions are available. No one was in custody as of Tuesday morning.
