Spirited Pearls Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Chi Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Monday, October 5, 2020. The Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. is co-hosting the Breast Cancer Awareness Event. The theme for this year’s event is Pink is the new HOPE. As many of you may know, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, accounting for nearly one in three cancers diagnosed in women. The death rate for black women is 42% higher than white women. Significantly, black women are nearly twice as likely as white women to be diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer which is more aggressive, spreads to other parts of the body faster and is harder to treat than other forms of breast cancer.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. recognize that early detection is a critical first step in fighting this dreadful disease. We are committed to make an impact by combating the devastating effects breast cancer has on our members, loved ones and families through education and mammogram screens.

We are pleased to announce a partnership with AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Bolingbrook and offer FREE mammograms to uninsured women. The mammogram registration deadline is Friday, September 25, 2020. This historic event will occur under the umbrella of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Target II – Women’s Healthcare and Wellness and Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. – Health Initiative.

On Monday, October 5, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. we will host a zoom breast cancer awareness virtual workshop featuring Dr. Sheela Konda from AMITA Health and Dr. Kimberley Darey from Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. Workshop topics will include breast cancer screening, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Our goal is to make a significant difference in the lives of women who may not otherwise have access to the resources needed to save their lives. Together, we will make a difference through this life-saving initiative because we know that when it comes to breast cancer, early detection is a serious matter.
