School Bus Rear-Ended at Railroad Tracks; No Reported Injuries

Another driver struck the back of the bus as it stopped before the tracks, according to officials.

For the second time this week, a Plainfield School District school bus was involved in a crash Wednesday afternoon.

District 202 Community Relations Director Tom Hernandez said the First Student bus was rear-ended while it was stopped before proceeding across the railroad tracks on Lockport Street near Eastern Avenue. By law, school buses are required to come to a complete stop before proceeding through a railroad crossing.

Hernandez said the bus was transporting students from Plainfield North High School after school was dismissed at 12:05 p.m. Students had a shortened school day due to scheduled parent-teacher conferences Wednesday evening.

According to Hernandez, one student said his knee struck the back of the seat in front of him during the crash, but his parents declined treatment at the scene. No other students reported injuries, he said.

Hernandez said despite the fact that the vehicle became wedged under the back of the bus, there was no damage to the bus itself.

Plainfield police Sgt. Mike Fisher said the driver of the vehicle was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said he had no reports of injuries from the incident.
