DuPage Health Officials Confirm 2 MRSA Cases in Area High School

The student athletes have since been treated and cleared of the disease.

DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — County health officials confirmed Thursday that two cases of MRSA, a type of staph infection, have been found at Naperville Central.

The infected students were members of the varsity football team, according to a report from ABC 7. DuPage County Health Department spokesman Dan Bolger told the station they were notified of the infections Wednesday.

MRSA is resistant to several antibiotics and is spread through contact with an infected wound or by sharing personal items, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

“MRSA infection risk can be increased when a person is in activities or places that involve crowding, skin-to-skin contact, and shared equipment or supplies,” the CDC said.

According to the report, a school custodian wiped down equipment and rooms used by the football team.
