Burr Ridge: Here's Where Storm Hit Hardest

In most cases, downed trees "miraculously" missed houses, mayor says.

BURR RIDGE, IL – In Burr Ridge, Sunday night’s storm hit hardest in the southwestern part of town, the village said Monday. Officials received no reports of injuries.

In a statement, Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso said the damage was greatest from 79th to 87th streets, from just west of Madison Street to County Line Road. There was also major damage in the Arrowhead area.

Grasso identified the Parkview, Braemoor and Lake Ridge subdivisions as the worst impacted areas. Many large trees were uprooted or severely damaged, “miraculously missing houses almost everywhere,” the mayor said.

In some cases, though, trees and large branches hit houses with evident damage to a few roofs, Grasso said. He also said the storm downed a transformer west of Madison at 83rd Street, while one large uprooted tree blocked all of 82nd Street, becoming tangled with power lines.

Grasso said he and Village Administrator Evan Walter walked and drove in some damaged areas and spoke with a few residents.

“It could have been worse,” Grasso said. “I saw neighbors already helping neighbors to clear areas and drag branches to curbs.”

Much of the area was cleaned up by Monday afternoon. A ComEd crew was still seen working along Madison Street.

Grasso signed a seven-day emergency declaration that would let village staff make emergency purchases to clean up the village. Such purchases would include hiring tree services, renting equipment and paying overtime, he said. Public works and administration staff have been out since 3 a.m. Monday.

The expenses will be referred to the Village Board for review and submitted to the state for reimbursement under applicable emergency grants, the mayor said.

On Friday, the village plans a tree and branch pickup for residents living between 79th and 87th streets from Madison Street to County Line Road as well as Arrowhead subdivision. Residents in those areas should bring their trees and branches to the curb by Thursday evening. Any building debris should be put in garbage bins and arranged with the Groot garbage service for pickup.
